15 Secrets Successful People Know About Time Management By Kevin Kruse Book Review
Hi guys and welcome back.
So today I am really going to talk about a great new book I have just received, its by Kevin Kruse, a number one selling author in the New York Times and he has produced and excellent book.
It is really amazing what this book does, it ties into the great things I have on my own website about time management. This takes it to another great level and gives you some great in depth tips.
15 Secrets Successful People Know About Time Management. In here Kevin Kruse talks about really great stuff which really does connect, and has a coaching philosophy behind it. He ties into aspects like where do you want to be? How will you do it? (taking action). What is your actual drive? (the why’s) He connects all this together and this is what successful people do to achieve what they want.
Here are my highlights from the book.
1 - How you manage your time?
What is your most important resource? Time is your most important resource, you can’t get it back you can’t buy more time and this is what Kevin stresses in his book. People are going to try and take time away from you and he talks about how you can manage people so they do not take precious time from you.
So the important part here is to make sure that you know how important time is to you.
2 - Scrapping to do lists.
Yes, we all makes lists don't we. We do that list, that list and that list. We make a massive great list and we tick parts of the list off because it makes us feel good. Yes it makes us feel Grrrrreeeat! But that list could be as long as your arm ( what I meant by this is that it could be a very long list indeed!) It could be infinite so you will never really get to the end of the list. The next day you will add to it, so you really never get to the end!
So Kevin says scrap to do lists and everything you do just calendar it (or schedule, whatever you prefer to call it)
2.1 - M.I.T = Most Important Task.
Now this aligns with a lot of stuff I talk about in my videos, in terms of getting what you want so, what is your purpose? What is your drive? So everything you do feeds into that MIT! Again this is what successful people do, they do this every day. Everything they do feeds into their most important task (their overall goal). This is their main purpose or main drive. That is why their businesses excel, they can engage their people, because they know that everything they do is efficient towards what they actually want to do or achieve.
It is really important before you do anything with this is just to make sure that you identify your purpose and identify what you want to do. Then everyday feed the actions you do on a daily basis into that main purpose and what you want to do. This is great because on my time management page you will see that you have the not urgent and important boxes that I have created and if you go to that web page you will be able to see. What this time management tool does, it makes those important but not urgent tasks fit into your everyday activity. What I am talking about are the tasks which make you grow and make you more efficient so you can really drive towards what you want to be in terms of your work, life or whatever is important to you.
What I am not saying is the urgent and important tasks take over, if your boss rings you, you need to carry out that instruction, what I am saying is, it actually does allow you to schedule actual time for your important but not urgent tasks, which is your personal growth and development. This is what I love about this because getting rid of your to do lists and scheduling time is great. Getting time to carry out tasks that feed into your purpose is highly important.
Being efficient in meetings - Another thing Kevin does is talk about meetings, some seem to go on forever don't they! The reason is, is that they are not focused. Kevin encourages you to set a time limit for the meeting, for example setting the time at 15 minutes for the meeting, and that means that it must stay at 15 minutes! Producing an agenda and sticking to this rigidly and knowing what the intended outcomes are. He recalls in the book something that Steve Jobs of Apple did where he had walking meetings, which is great. They lasted 5 or 10 minutes but they got straight to the point quickly and this is what successful people do. They are efficient with their time!
3 Calendar your time.
Calendar it, calendar everything for that day! So if you have your meetings schedule them onto your calendar. When you want to talk with someone, you don’t just say let us grab a minute. If you are going to have a meeting with someone arrange a 15 minute meeting with them (or whatever you feel is the appropriate time for that meeting, it could be 5 minutes!), so people know that you only have 15 minutes, it sets the expectation!
He also talks about the 1440, that is one thousand four hundred and fourty minutes in a day! Kevin put a big sign on his door, which was really really good because it reminded him and also reminded his people that actually this is how many minutes there are in a day. This resulted in people being more mindful about making interruptions and what he called “stealing minutes” This encouraged people to make appointments or arrange a meeting to discuss the points. In some instances people did not really need to see him and resolved the issue themselves ( so this eliminated unnecessary adhoc discussions that did not have an outcome focus), as they now had the message of how important time is and to make efficient use of it.
4 - Having a healthy morning routine or ritual.
This about having morning rituals so you start off energised in the morning, a lot of successful people get energised in the morning by actually having a really healthy ritual. For example they will start a 6am with a glass of water and do some exercise. They will have a healthy breakfast; it is really important that you get into that routine. I really like the one where he gets up at 6am before everyone else and starts a meditation or has some reflecting time. I have started to do that (in fact I have now added a healthy smoothie as I have just purchased a Nutri Bullett!) This really does work; the water in the morning really kick starts you. It is really about starting the day on the right foot (correct foot!) in terms of getting that motivation and reflecting on what you about to embark upon that day. So you are able to put that energy into the day and what you want to do. (this leads into your drive and purpose; what you want to achieve)
The morning ritual is a really good one; the book has some really great practical tips.
5 - So what is the book like?
The book is really engaging, you can really use the stuff that Kevin has put in the book, which is really really vital. These things are not massive, they are really focused on what you can do and apply it to your own daily life.
This stuff is coming from really successful people; people like Steve Jobs, Richard Branson. Kevin has taken brilliant quotes from them in interviews. He also gives examples about what he has done and how successful he has been when building his own business.
It gives you models you can follow so you can really excel. So whether you own a business or work for a business, you can really use this; you can also use it for your own personal development; a lot of the stuff I talk about you can also use for yourself everyday. So if you go to your job you can use it and you can focus on what you need to do. So I would encourage you to get this book.
At the moment he is doing an amazing thing, he is actually making the book free! So if you go to Kevin Kruse’s website all you have to do is pay for the postage and packing and then you can actually get it for free. It is a limited offer; I will put the link on my Youtube channel and I will also put it on my website. You will see the link under my video here.
I would encourage you to get it, it is really good and not a lot of people know about Kevin Kruse in the UK. So this is really something you can use now; there is exciting stuff going on in America, but you have the chance to use this now.
I hope you liked this video and enjoyed this book review. It is part of my passion; I like to read and find different models that can help you. If you like the video, please give it a big thumbs up on YouTube. Also make sure you visit Kevin’s website but also remember to come back to mine too!
