How to impress at your job interview
Hi I am Joe Noya your peak performance coach and I am back again to give you some top tips on how to ace an interview. This has come about as I found out some information about people who want to get jobs at Land Rover Jaguar, so what I am going to give you today is 5 top tips. You can use these tips for any interview and they will work just as well.
Before we start the top tips I want to give you some really basic information that we should really cover, the first piece of information is:
Image - You should dress appropriately for the interview that you are going attend. If you are going for a professional position then for men you need to wear a suit, shoes re-heeled if needed. If you are a lady then again a suit jacket with a pencil skirt so that you look professional according to the position you are applying for.
Technical research and revision - It goes without saying that you should research the company and carry out technical research or revision to make sure you ace any technical tests they may put you through.
These 5 top tips are going to ensure that if you have two top candidates where both of you have done well technically on any tests; the interviewer is going to look at is how well one of you performed at interview and these are where these tips are going to give you that edge.
Top Tip 1 - Body Language
This is a massive tip; you are going to come in that door and they are going to look at you, how you dress, talk and walk in that door. They will be taking all this in subconsciously so you need to ensure you take full advantage of this and they key here is to ensure you generate a feeling that they are going like you even before you have spoken a word. Within the first 30 seconds they may have already decided whether you are right for the job or not, even if they say they do not judge image we cannot help but be human beings and they will make unconscious judgements which will generate feelings as to whether you are a fit with the company or not. So this is your chance to impress, you must hit all these markers to get that edge.
So go in with your head held high, good eye contact and a firm handshake, no limp lettuces please and also not too hard a handshake that you break their hand, just a firm confident handshake. Practice this with a friend or relative so that you can master this one. Regular eye contact, but do not stare them out! With these actions you are saying to them non-verbally that you are interested in the job, the company and them!
Top Tip 2 - Rapport
People like to employ people they like so when I say rapport what I would like you to do is to go in there and mirror their body language. So it may be that the cross their legs; now with mirroring you would not do this at exactly the same time (as this may be picked up and could be very annoying) you just wait for say 20 seconds or so and cross your legs but in a different way. They may then clasp their hands and again you will do likewise, after a short period of time in a similar but not exactly the same way but gradually, as you begin to get in rapport you will notice a difference.
You will start to get on much better and you will be able to understand much more easily, it will feel as though the interview is flowing and both you and the interviewer will begin to feel at ease. That is how you will know whether you are in rapport or not. Mirroring is a really great tip and again practice this with a friend and see how it works. Also try the other way where you are consciously not mirroring and feel the difference on how you interact. I promise this really works! If you are unsure get in contact and I can expand on this for you.
Top Tip 3 - Likeability
This really fits nicely with top tip number 2 which is rapport. The way to use this is to use a conversational style of engagement. So you may have had a trip up on the train where you spotted a famous celebrity or something unusual happened on your journey. What we are trying to do here is to have a little conversation with the interviewer. Usually when you first go into an interview they will try and make you feel relaxed and one of the questions they may ask was how was your trip to the interview and this is where you can use your “ I spotted a famous celebrity or recall in brief the unusual incident that happened” So the interviewer may ask “well who was the celebrity or what happened after the unusual incident” Suddenly you have entered into a conversation not related to the interview but you are connecting directly with the interviewer and are already finding out what they are interested in which generates that feeling of likeabilty. Warning, make sure not to ramble on though, remember you are at an interview, unless of course the interviewer invites you to expand on any further details. If that happens you are well on your way to getting that job!
They are going to remember that conversation and how easy it was to connect or converse with you, and they had a feeling that they liked you, this is their unconscious mind telling them that they had a good conversation with you. That will definitely give you an edge! When those scores come back from the tests and there is nothing for them to choose between you and other candidates, they will remember how you performed at the interview!
Top Tip 4 - Competency based questions
You would have heard a lot about competency based questions if you have researched interview techniques. When answering these questions you should follow a set structure which is called S.T.A.R.
Situation
Task
Actions
Results
It is important that you keep to those four areas otherwise you can just ramble on and potentially lose the interviewer in waffle or bore them which you do not want to do. When answering the questions you need to be concise.
For example the question may be “ Can you give me an example when you dealt with conflict in a team?”
The Situation is the conflict maybe two team members arguing. The Task is to resolve that conflict so you start of with, yes we had two team members who were arguing. Then what Actions did you take for example did you take them into a room away from the work area to provide a different environment to discuss the issue with you as the mediator? What did you do to remedy the argument and how you did resolve it. Then this brings us to the Result was it a positive result where you resolved the conflict? If so you need to say that. Even if you did not resolve it you could explain what you learned from the experience which can be just as powerful as this shows that you learn from your errors.
Remember Situation, Task, Actions and Results; this is a brilliant technique to follow as it keeps you focused on what is being, asked and you are being concise about how you resolved a situation as this is exactly what they are after.
What if they give a question you cannot answer and you do not have any experience? This can be tricky, but one thing you must never do is try to blag the answer or lie. The reason for this is that if you get an experienced interviewer, they will be able to drill into your answer and ask follow up questions that you will not be able to answer as you have not had that experience. All that hard work you would have done throughout the interview will be lost in an instant!
If you do not have any experience regarding the question they are asking then be honest about it, tell them I have never come across that situation before. One way to tackle this one is to say, but if I was to come across this situation this is what I would do and you can use the S.T.A.R method again to explain your answer.
Top Tip 5 - Prepare to ask a question or questions
People who do interviews want you to ask questions the reason for that it shows you are interested. So any questions should be positive ones, you could ask questions like, what is the culture like here? Does the business have a a mission statement? What arethe companies vision and values? What are the company aims over the next two years? I am sure you will be able to come up with even more amazing questions.
A really nice question shows that you are interested and have made the effort to engage, and of course you really want the job!

Using visualisation to secure that job!
Visualising getting that job script is here with my extra's. It is just like getting me on blu ray! :)
Hi guys and welcome back again, my name is Joe Noya your Peak Performance Coach. Thanks to all of you for tuning in that includes all you new people out there experiencing this for the first time, so welcome and thanks for tuning in.
This is going to be a shorter video as I have done some other longer videos, this one is going to be short, sharp and really useful. This video is going to go under my job interview section.
In this video I am going to show you a technique that you can use before the interview, which will be really useful. Top people use this technique and some top people don't even realise that they use it because it is just something they do naturally! I have tried this out myself through the discovery of reading a book by Anthony Robbins, it may have been the Awaken the Giant Within, where he talked about visualisation and this is what I am going to talk to you about today.
Have you ever seen a film called Rush directed by Ron Howard? (yes he did used to be in Happy Days, how cool!) Well this is where one of the actors ( now at the time of recording my video I could not for the life of me remember the name of the person who played James Hunt, well I can tell you now that it is Chris Hemsworth! I just searched it on Google!) played James Hunt one of the successful racing car drivers of the 1970’s. Now there was only about a 30 second piece of footage in the film where you see James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth!) actually visualising his race going around the circuit before he raced! So it just shows you the value of visualisation by top performers and after this video have a go and see for yourself!
There was also some experiments done in relation to visualisation to see whether performance could be improved, again I think this was in the Anthony Robbins book, I think it was an experiment involving basket ball where one group visualised shooting baskets, another group rested and another group kept on practising physically. Guess what; the group who visualised scoring baskets out performed the other two groups!
I can also evidence this as I have used this technique myself, before I attended an interview for a law firm. A week or two before I started to visualise who I would act speak and answer questions etc. The interview turned out to be 2 hours long! But throughout the whole two hours I was able to maintain my performance, confidence and maintained discipline through the whole interview process to secure the position.
So I am sharing this with you so you can use it for your own success!! I really want you to succeed and this technique goes hand in hand with my other video top tips for interview techniques (which is just above this one)
1 - First of all visualise how you want to be at the interview, for example remembering to be confident, so this means acting confident and visualising confidence. So you can close your eyes and visualise how you would be, just before you get into the interview sitting down and then having that feeling of confidence. You can do this by closing your eyes, writing down how you want to be or by imagining pictures in your head or even drawing pictures; really whatever works for you. It may be just thinking about it, but this does meant that you must practice this daily so you imagine that you are at the interview, so when the day comes, your brain will already programmed to carry out what you have visualised!
Some of the visualisation may be imagining parts of the building, such as going in the door ( of course you do not know what type of door you will be walking through but at this stage it does not matter, a door that appeals to you would be good) How you will shake the persons hand e.g. with confidence ( as per my interview technique video previous to this!) Imagine how you are speaking; speaking clearly and with confidence, and slow enough so the words are fully understood by the interviewer. Clearly not too slowly and not too quickly otherwise they will not understand you. ( the beauty of this is that you can visualise your perfect interview!) So when you are going through the visualisation you are expressing your self confidence and inner skill that you have and that you are able to express yourself to do yourself justice. (all this before you even get to the interview, how amazing!) Think about the competency questions practicing those; you can visualise actually answering those questions really confidently.
Imagine your body language, how you are going to be? Shoulders back; it is important to imagine how your body is going to be, as your body is linked to the mind and the mind is liked to the body. So once you imagine this in your mind; when you go into that interview you will have this in your mind, when you actually come to the interview situation your brain will make sure that you carry out whatever you visualised ( you would have been prepared already and gone through this 100 times before, because you would have practised visualisation!)
The next thing to do is to imagine you are there, imagine the colour of the walls, how you are going feel and it is important you consider the way you feel throughout the whole interview, as I said before from how you shake hands, to the little pre-interview conversation that improves your likeability. You can also imagine the types of questions they will be asking you as you would have prepare this in advance and you can visualise how you would response to those questions in a confident way. The beauty of visualisation is that you can go through the process as many times as you like.
So I hope this has helped you it is really important that you just try it out and see how you get on, and don't forget to let me know how you found using the technique. I wish you all the best of luck (though I know you wont need it because you will be amazing and you will make your own luck!)
