Apologies I have not blogged for a while, but I am now back and want to talk about adversity and how we can all deal with this in a positive way.
Now you all may think that facing redundancy is a terrible process and on the surface it is. However you can re-frame this process and take this as an opportunity to renew and re-boot the way you think about your career. Remember every negative situation can be viewed from a positive perspective, this will change your view point and will therefore give you the chance to improve that situation. They way you think is very important and remember you control the way you think. In these times companies are having to change and evolve otherwise they are going to fail, this is when redundancies come into effect. They are essentially change mechanisms so that a company can evolve and change the business model. Of course there are firms who do not change their business models and therefore are still at risk even when they do make redundancies. The business world is very much like mother nature, where natural selection will only chose the fittest firms to survive and thrive. They and you cannot become dinosaurs and you need to re-fresh, re-learn and re-new. This is in line with the Stephen Covey saying " sharpen the saw ". In essence Mr Covey is talking about continued learning and keeping your mind in shape as you would your body. His book the 7 habits is an excellent read, and I would encourage you to read this book even if you are not going through this process yourself at this time. So you may say so what, and who are you comment on such a subject? Well I have been through this process myself on a few occasions and I must be honest the first time it happened made a massive impact on my confidence. I thought I was doing a great job, I had pride in my work and still I was made redundant. I could not understand it, why was this happening? I felt I had no control but I did realise eventually that I could control my actions and had to learn to leave aspects I could not control, for example who the company would select for redundancy! (that was the hard part). I had not at that point experienced coaching, neither did I have the psychological tools I have now to get through such a process, but on the upside it did make me stronger. The choice to make me redundant was not personal it was simply down to the fact that I did not suit their model.(though I did not think this at the time) The strange thing was that when I had come to terms with it, I started to let go of the things I could not control and took action on aspects I could control. I then went all out and took massive action; this eventually resulted with me securing another role. I had renewed some of my skills and this resulted in me discovering this new opportunity. I simply took action and stayed positive and it worked! As I was about to leave the firm I was offered another role within the company, I could not believe how well things were working out for me. I decided to leave the firm in the end which was really difficult as the firm had been a large part of my career, but I decided that I needed a new challenge. My positive attitude was also validated and I again believed in my abilities. So I can safely say that this stuff works and it can work for you just the same; you just need to believe in yourself. So how do you deal with such a situation? When facing such a situation you need to focus on you, believe in yourself and your abilities, but be open to renew your skills. When this happens life is tapping you on the shoulder and saying, "hey you need to change and evolve if you are to thrive." You need to take action. This is when you can use the coaching tools to help you, if you are facing such a situation you have a fantastic opportunity to really focus on your passions and re-new. It may have been that you had been coasting in your current role, but now you have the opportunity to renew and look forward to a new challenge. Visit the goal setting page and re-new click here. The first thing is to stay focused and also to stay positive. Firms sometimes monitor employee behaviour whilst going through this process and see how individuals handle the uncertain environment. If you stay focused and positive this will give out positive messages to your employer, and it will also help you focus on your own career and skills that you may need to renew. Resilience (the meaning is "THE ABILITY TO RECOVER FROM ADVERSITY". Now resiliance is what successful people have in abundance (you can have some of this stuff too and you deserve it), this is something you must focus on when going through adversity. Your bounce back ability is very important in such a situation and this will really help you get through the process; it will help you to identify new opportunities. If you let your negative side take over then you are more likely to miss opportunities, also your employer will notice negative behaviour and this could affect your chances within a redundancy process. Negative behaviour is self defeating; remember you must take responsibility as to how you behave and this will not serve your needs at a time like this. Here are some steps for you to get you started:
These are just a few steps to get started but be true to yourself and also be open minded. Seek feedback from trusted colleagues and friends, they may have valuable insights into your current behaviour which you may need to review so that you can improve. This also goes for your current skills. Of course all good friends and colleagues will be supportive, and this is a time when you will be able to know for sure which people truly support you. As they say you know who your friends are when the **** hits the fan! I hope this is helpful and wish you all the very best if you are going through this process.
