How ideas become reality always amazes me and the way you guys make it happen is even more awesome than I can imagine. As an example of this, if you read my April and May blogs you would have read about a friend of mine who had an idea about launching a GoogleX ideas factory within his company. It is all about innovation and how you get people working in the business developing their ideas and taking ownership to improve their working environment, the result of which will also bring efficiencies and benefits to the business. You know I said that the business was not ready for this concept, but I thought it would run at some level; just to let you know this is now happening across his entire area. All of a sudden people have bought into the idea and now sessions have happened and more and more people are becoming engaged with the project. Now the most important aspect of this was how he has engaged the people who have shown an interest. When we start with any idea we must have a passion for it, help people understand it so they can see the benefits and how this can help them on a personal level. It is also about finding your true voice so it comes from our very inner core, and that our intentions behind any initiative are for both the people and the business. In this instance this idea hits both of those areas! When the concept was launched and people were asked to sign up, my friend responded individually to each and every idea that was put forward for this initiative, By doing this people started to tell each other about the project and how a high level manager was responding individually to them and cared about the idea they put forward. Now I just don’t mean that he said “oh that is a good idea” No, he would seek to understand the idea and provide his own interpretation and why he thought it might work. This creates synergistic environment which produces a culture of team work which aims for better, more effective solutions and ideas. That is not to mean there will not be any disagreements, it just sets the culture in such a way that people will respect each others ideas and will want to build on those ideas. This also includes a space of trust, where there is a common agreement and acceptance that some ideas will not work and this cultural acceptance within the groups creates a trusting environment. When a group accept that there is no failure, and that by failing we improve and develop that is when you get high level concepts and ideas which really work, because they have been tested to the edge of destruction. This is what the GoogleX idea is all about. So what ideas do you have? Do you have an idea that will improve something in your own life, whether it is work or where you live? The first step is to get that idea out there, because if you are passionate about the idea then people will be with you. They will see your passion and will help you develop your idea, in that way you may develop the idea and make it even more amazing! Talking of ideas and the third alternative, I am currently reading the 8th Habit by Stephen Covey. He is an amazing coach, but unfortunately he is no longer with us, but his legacy lives on. His ideas and experience are truly amazing and he talks about the third alternative and you can use this to develop your ideas and also listen to the ideas of others to truly understand their position. If you have an area of disagreement or an impasse he explains a simple process to help you generate a third alternative. The rules a very simple: 1 - Ask people who are disagreeing; (this could be you; if you are trying to put forward an idea or concept) Would you be willing to search for a solution that is better than what either one of us has proposed? 2 - Would you agree to a simple ground rule: No one can make his or her point until they have restated the other person’s point to his or her satisfaction. These simple two steps are vital if you want to have a discussion with someone who may be resisting your idea. Of course you may not agree, or you may not achieve an understanding and that is okay too, because you see you are always allowed to say that there is no deal to have here. But by having these two simple rules 9 times out of 10 you will get amazing results and you will also gain the respect of others around you. The reason is that you will also be truly listening to the other person and trying to understand what it is they are trying to get across to you. Yes, I know this is not easy, but if your persist this will make you even more effective and you will be able to get your ideas out there and other people will buy into it! Stephen Covey always talks about passing on learning, because if we pass on the learning we are truly practicing that learning which then creates a habit of improvement. Once we create those habits we are then shaping who we want to become by being intentional and taking action to achieve. So face your fear, share your idea with someone! Why not share it here? What idea would you want to implement and become a reality, put a comment down below! The first step is expressing the idea and how it will benefit others in a positive and meaningful way. Until next time be awesome out there!
