How have you all been since I last blogged? Last time I blogged I was writing about resilience, if you haven’t had the chance to read it you can catch it here. How to be resilient! Having coached for a huge part of my professional life, one of the most important factors to success is behaviours. In one of my most recent coaching sessions, this subject cropped up once again. We all do it from time to time, we get resistant to change our behaviours because we think it is not giving us value and we may think we are doing this for the business and just helping someone else line their pockets. If we work for a business that is owned by someone else, sometimes we can think, why should I learn this new process or try and come up with new ideas to solve a problem? You may think this is not my problem or this is not my process, I will let someone else do that because that is their job! Think of it this way; if you learn new skills or start to look to solve problems for the business you are in then this adds value to you! No one can take that away from you; of course at that moment you are assisting the business but you are also assisting yourself and at the same time adding value to the business and gaining new and valuable skills. No matter what happens in the future you will keep those skills wherever you go, and yes you would have helped that business and that will also enhance your reputation as a problem solver or someone who has unique skills, that means you will be sought after and become much more valuable. Many people tell me that they want to earn more money; I have created a video about this and you can see it here. How to earn more money. The way you do this is to have skills that are needed and that are rare in the market place. I always use examples such as CEO’s, and ask them to look at the skills that person has acquired, the only way a CEO gets to the top is because their skills are rare and not everyone has them. They have behaviours that everyone else around them doesn’t have; if that was the case and the CEO was the same as everyone else in their business they would not be the CEO! The fact is they have skills and behaviours that are in demand, hence increased pay and responsibility. If you have the same skills as everyone else in your department then you are not rare, however if you have those skills and keep adding to them, then the more skills you have the rarer you become then more value you can add. The more value you can add to the business, the more earnings you will attract. The fact is that skills are like products, the rarer and more valuable they are the higher the price, it is all about supply and demand. If your skills are in high demand, but there are not many people with those skills then your value will sky rocket! So the next time you think I won’t bother learning a process, try to solve a business issue or learn a new skill think about it first, if I can solve this problem or can create a process that will enhance the business what behaviours and skills am I adding to myself. I would suggest keeping a journal and when you solve a problem in whatever business you are in or add value, write it down. This way you can add it your CV or if you own a business or are self employed you will be able to use this as a unique selling point when speaking to clients. Tony Robins once gave a great example of continuous improvement and he used the example of a golfer striking a ball from the tee. He said “ if you think about your skills like a golfer then you will start to be able to improve your own abilities. In reality we are only a fraction away from becoming more successful. Just like the golfer, they just need to adjust their swing so very slightly; slightly to much to the left and they hook the ball into the rough, too much to the right, again too much slice and into the rough it goes. Another degree either way leads to success i.e. much nearer to their goal to get their hole on one! This is what behaviours are all about. Adjust your swing and always look to improve your behaviour so you can become more successful every day. These can be small things such as taking an extra ten seconds to make sure something is spot before you give it to someone, or it might also be reaching out to someone and being kind to enhance their lives but this will also add yours. The possibilities is endless! Here are some questions to ask yourself:
Let me know what you think; one final question what are you going to do today to improve your behaviour to become more successful? Leave a comment below so you can commit to doing it today!
