I am really glad you have taken the time to click on the link and read this, this could literally change your earning capacity! I am going to let you in on a well known secret that people seem to have forgotten. Now when people want to earn more money they make a fatal mistake. I have coached many clients who focus on the salary, you may think, well that is alright as it keeps me focussed etc,etc. The problem with this is that you have no control whether you will get an increase in salary, and if you are self employed whether the market will allow you to have increased income! Ask yourself do I have control over that? Well no you don't, the problem is when you think you do have that control you place blame on everyone else except you! What happens is that people become frustrated because they are not getting what they want,as they try and control something they cannot control. So you need to re-focus your efforts not on the salary, but on you! Think about it, can you control the company you work for and say " Hey I deserve an increase!" Do you? Why should you get the increase? Two very important questions. You may get it, you may not, but the reality here is that you do not control that decision. This is also true if you run a business. You cannot expect your employer or a market to award you for the same things you keep on doing. So what now? The problem is when people are not getting that increase they get angry and start to blame everything else. They say the company does not care about me or the economic conditions are not right; moan, moan, moan etc. Of course this is the environment which may have an influence on you, but you control you, and you make the decisions to not let the environment affect you don't you? You decide what actions you take, whether you will just rebel and take the company for a ride or blame other things etc. Think about it, does this help you earn more money? Well,no! People in this scenario that are angry or get negative start to do the exact opposite to what they need to do. Their performance drops, communication decreases and they just survive and just plod on! Now if you were an employer or involved in the market place, would you give someone an increase or more money if they did not provide you with increased performance or improved customer service? Do you think the market would be willing to pay more for a service or product which was readily available and in abundance and did not provide something which was in short supply? Absolutley not! So here is the thing, you need to re-focus your energy, you need to add value to you or your business. You need to stand out from the rest, you need to perform, you need to provide that excellent customer service if you want that increase. You may say you are crazy why should I give my all to this company or the market? I am doing okay, but I thought you wanted to want more money? Well you need to remember you are doing this for you, no one can take from you your excellent performance, or that new skill you have learned, or that excellent service or product your company is supplying; remember you are doing this for you because you want to earn more money aren't you? So you may do this at your current firm, but the beauty of adding a new skill, getting more responsibility and providing that excellent customer service because you have good knowledge, is that you take this all with you. A byproduct is that yes, you do help your business and this is great because this also makes you feel good as you are contributing, even If you think they do not care. This action may change their view and whatever happens they cannot take these things from you. Whether you go into another role, get further responsibility or even move companies. Let me tell you those people who are highly skilled at what they do can demand their price! Why is this? This is because of supply and demand a basic economic understanding. Think for a moment and be honest who in your opinion is performing highly at your company or within your market? I bet they are being recognised either with more responsibility or a higher increment in wages, or more profit because of this performance etc. If not I bet if they went into the market they could demand higher wages and the firm which is brave and provides that excellent customer service or product can name the price they want! Think Apple products as a supreme example. You see the issue is that there are less people and companies with high value skills or brilliant services or products and a lot of people who have average skills. For example think of highly rated CEO's they command high wages because they are very good at what they do, they add value to the business. This is because they have found the key to adding value to themselves, therefore making them rare in the market place. For example Imagine if all the orange trees in the world suddenly died what do you think would happen to the value of oranges? You are right, the price would go through the roof! So now you know what to do, make yourself valuable so you become very rare like those oranges! I am amazed that people keep doing the same things expecting things to change, that will never happen unless they change their current actions, in this case making themselves more valuable! Do you want to keep inflating that tyre all your life? If you have not read my tyre story please read my previous blog. So there you have it a very well known secret that people have forgotten, you may say " yes I know all that" if that is the case then why are you reading this as you should be earning all you want! There is a difference to knowing and actually doing which is the all important factor. If you want to earn more you need to make yourself more valuable. You could do this by adding a skill that is in short supply, be the best performer, start to take on more responsibility so your employer cannot do without you. If you are a business you need to stand out from the crowd, for example providing excellent customer service or providing a service which is in short supply which will create that demand. So, are you going to change your actions to get some different results? May be you need to be going on that course or asking your boss if you can assist with some of their duties. If you are a business asking your customers how you can improve your service etc.? Ask yourself do I want to want to earn more money? If so focus on you and not the salary, that will come to you once you make yourself more valuable, the market will make sure of it! So here is the challenge start to change your actions over the next ten days and post back the results you get! I bet you will get some great results which will be better than the ones you are getting right now. Of course if this was easy everyone would be doing it, that is why only the few that take the chance to change get the rewards. Be brave challenge yourself and let me know how you get on.
