Affirmations.
So what are they?
This is a very powerful tool to combat negative self talk. Many of the clients that I coach have negative self talk, for example they say to themselves " I can't do that or I will fail if I do that" An affirmation is something that you repeat to yourself so that you start to think in a more positive way to cancel out negative self talk.
For example if you say to yourself " I have a terrible memory!" guess what, you will have a terrible memory as you are not allowing yourself to have a fantastic memory. So an example positive affirmation would be "I wake up each day and I will have a fantastic memory" If you repeat this over and over your brain will start to accept this and you will find ways to have a fantastic memory. The reason for this is that you are now telling yourself and your brain that you can have a fantastic memory. Simple but very effective.
Exercise to complete over the next 10 days and onwards
1. Identify what negative self talk you are currently experiencing. Look out for the language you are using. When you are facing a challenge is usually the time it raises its head, so be conscious about what are you saying to yourself.
2. When you identify them write down the ones that make your feel most negative.
3. Look at the negative messages and change them to something that will inspire you and are a positive version of that negative statement as above.
4. Repeat the affirmations 10 times out loud before you go to bed and in the morning as soon as you wake up.
Even if you do not believe them at first this does not matter as you are programming your thinking. Think about how you started to think negatively, this is because you repeatedly said these messages to yourself. This is exactly the same process but in reverse which will produce a very powerful and positive effect.
Let me know how you get on, I know you can do it.
