We make choices out of pure habitWe all have the power of choice it just comes down to recognising when we are making choices. Most of the time we make choices out of pure habit and don’t really think how that choice is impacting our lives. I call these micro choices! As soon as you get out of bed you’re making choices, you get up, brush your teeth, perhaps you have breakfast or you don’t! The fact is we don’t really think about them because they’re ingrained habits! You need to get real honest with yourselfIf you really want to start changing your life you really have to become aware of how you are making your choices! At this time of year, we see the weight loss programmes advertise really heavily because they know it’s the best time of year to get people enrolled in a programme. People have just gone through the Christmas holidays and have just gone overboard and now feel guilty and want to lose some weight. Now I am not knocking these programmes it's just that I don’t believe in short terms solutions which these programmes offer. Lose weight in six weeks or whatever! My view on this is that you just have to be conscious of the eating choices, and getting really honest with yourself (myself too). We are the ones that put food in our mouths we want to have that short pleasure burst which lasts for a fleeting moment but feels so good, then it’s gone and we’re left with the consequences of eating those two sugar doughnuts! Now I don’t want this to be a blog about that only because it all boils down to one simple thing, the decision that you/we made! Now that decision won’t have in the impact the day you make it, it will have an impact say 2 to 3 weeks down the line, when the pounds are going up and you say “ how is this happening?” This is where we just don’t have the awareness that that choice we made 2 to 3 weeks has had that impact! Making a mistake once is okay, making it twice is a choice!I love the saying that making a mistake once that’s okay, but making the same mistake twice is a choice. If you repeat the mistake then you are making a choice! I just love that because we should be learning from those errors, the issue is that we make choices from an emotional standpoint because it’s so powerful. The way to start to really undo these habits is to really be conscious of the choices you are making. This is why having goals and have a vision for your life is so important. Sit down and write a vision for your lifeYou can decide today to sit down and write a vision for how you want your life to be. Now the beauty of that is that you will now be able to see whether your choices are aligned with that vision. Say you want to save money, you would now need to look at your spending habits. If you now say to yourself “ I am good with money” you need to ask yourself what are the habits that make people good with money? Perhaps it’s not getting that latte every day or buying that breakfast every morning before you go to work. Someone who is good with money will perhaps pack their own breakfast or lunch. They won’t go into shops and impulse buy; if they have a list of shopping they won’t deviate and be tempted to put something into their trolly. I think you get the idea. How do you start to make it happen?Well, this is all well and good you might say but how do I start to make this happen? The first thing you need to do is to create the vision for your life and make it so damn important that it will remind you to stop making the choices that are affecting the vision and who you want to become. I’m only going to give you one action step: 1 - Create the vision and then take it with you, put reminders everywhere about your vision! So when you start making choices you can think about your vision and whether the choice you are making in the moment serves that vision. That’s it! You may fall off the wagon, but get back on immediately! Now this will be difficult and it will be hard, and you may fall off the wagon a few times. But don’t beat yourself up, just start again and keep going. Adjust the vision if you have to, to make it more emotionally embedded in what you do. So when you look at it, read it or listen to it, it’s so damn powerful that it cannot be resisted. Write down your intentions for the day every dayYou might ask so what do I do? Well, I have a journal and every morning I write in the journal my intent for the day and use that as a lever as I go through the day. I am not perfect and I also fall off the wagon, but I get back on again and do my very best to make it happen every day. So if I can do this so can you! That’s it and I would love to know how you get on, let me know in the comments or just connect with me over social!
