Having an open mind is so important and this is what we talked about in episode 11 of the podcast this week. We talked about just being open to new ideas so you don’t get caught up in your own world and ignore potential possibilities. I know I have done this, I thought my own belief’s were the be all and end all, and if anyone transgressed them I would get upset, perhaps not visibly on the outside but inside it would hurt. What I am talking about today is to be curious about things, if you don’t agree with something really think about it, don’t just judge it straight away. The thing that has helped me develop a more open mind, (and believe you me, I am still working on it) was finding the thing that lights me up. Inspiration more than anything is the thing that fills me up, when I am in an environment I am looking for people who will inspire me, who have a view which excites me and that brings a world of possibility. Yes, this can be scary because when you start talking about the world of possibility there will be risk, when you go and try to do something your heart will race, but deep down you know it is the right thing to do. Now because we get bombarded with pretty negative messages throughout the day from the news and other sources, our minds can become closed. We don’t want to go outside of our comfort zones because we think it’s dangerous, and yes there is a certain element of risk, but we need to use our minds to help us work things out. We control our minds not the other way round, So if we are headed in a new direction our mind is going to say “what are you doing?” We don’t usually do this! It’s going to shout at you, because it truly believes it wants to keep you safe, but you want to grow, you want to experience new things and to do this you need to be open minded. To be able to see things from a different perspective, to be able to see if you like the thing that you are going to try. Now if you were closed minded you wouldn’t even try it, you would say no and you would use your awesome mind to justify the decision. Our mind is a very powerful tool and we can use it to grow us or to keep us where we are. You need to take control of it! Training yourself to have an open mind is not easy, it takes practice. I am not saying that you should agree with everything, you still have your opinion. What I am asking you to do is to take a second look at things and ask yourself, is there an opportunity here that I am missing. Does this thing that I am about to try connect with me? What will I or what can I learn from this experience? What I am also not saying is to be naive, we still need to be able to consider whether someone has there best interest at heart for us, and for that you can definitely use your intuition! So the next time you don’t agree with someone, as yourself the reason. I am not asking you to change your mind, I am just asking you to try and think like they think and see whether you can get any value from that conversation. We talked about all of this on the podcast and here is the video, totally unedited! So I am going to give you 3 things to try this week:
1 - Next time you see something and you know you should try it, ask yourself why you are not willing to give it a go? What’s stopping you? Is it your mind using your intelligence against you to stop you growing. For example it could be giving a presentation in front of people! 2 - Do try something you have never done before and record what happened in a journal or in some other way so you can record the experience. What were the results? Did you like them? Were you able to learn anything from the experience? Of course I am not advocating putting yourself in moral danger! 3 - Try and be open minded to all points and see which ones resonate and which ones don’t. Don’t seek to judge, reflect and really think about what is going on and the real reason why you may or may not like what is being said or being proposed.
