Don’t let the dark clouds, black dog or whatever you want to call depression hold you back!12/22/2019 Don’t let dark skies dull your strengthsDepression is a very difficult thing to go through and to deal with day to day. If you have followed my journey you know what I’m talking about. If this is the first time you have come across me, please check out the Inspiration Nation podcast at InspirationNation.org.uk and listen to episode 1. You have strengths, there will be something that you find easy and that others don’t, don’t let depression dull your powers. It’s easier said than done, so read on! Holidays and Christmas can be the worst times! We are a few days from Christmas and I know for me it was so difficult to get the energy to put on a show for people because you are in a state of depression! Nothing seemed to shift, I felt numb not engaged and just wanted any social interaction to be over because it took so much energy. I was looking forward to the time for everyone to leave so I could be with my own thoughts and essentially just get deeper and deeper into it. You have nothing to be depressed about!People used to say “you have nothing to be depressed about!” You only really understand it once you have been through it and are dealing with it, even then everyone experiences a different version of it. So I am not going to blog about how you get out of it, what I will do is tell you how I got out and am now experiencing an amazing life which I never ever thought was possible. I have been so fortunate to have come out of it, and I will share a few things that worked for me and I am hoping they will help you. People would say to me “you have a family you have a job blah, blah, blah,” That’s how I used to think about it, they just didn’t understand even though now I understand they were trying to help me, but someone who says this is not helping. It’s not their fault they’ve just never been there so how could they understand! What worked was having a purposeWhat worked for me was having a purpose, I was so fortunate to find my calling which was coaching and helping people, but it was not a nailed on event. At first, I thought this was it, coaching is the silver bullet to me solving my depression! Who wrong was I !!! Even when I picked up my first book “Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway” by Susan Jeffers I read it, started absorbing the lessons and started taking action. I picked up Tony Robbins books, the one that totally resonated with me was “Unlimited Power” that started to open up my eyes to the perception of personal power. These two books gave me the key to the door I needed to open. But not only did I need to open the door but I needed to walk through it and that was the hard part! You need to alter your environment and changing the content you consume! To walk through that door I have had to alter my environment, that meant, changing the things I consumed as I knew somewhere in my head I had to alter the perception of my current reality! I started to get rid of all the trash TV like soaps, because they were giving me negative energy, there was always drama going on and most of the time there was a lot of depressing storylines! I also started to consume much more inspiring content, reading more personal development literature, I studied and still study books from Stephen Covey to the Tao of Coaching by Max Landsberg. There are many more, and my bookshelf is crammed with books and I still haven’t read all of them. I visited bookshops, charity shops (charity are the best shops to get your books cheaply it’s surprising how many of these books are available and for next to nothing!! You are also doing a great thing at the same time by giving back!) I became obsessed and still am about coaching and how it can really make a difference in your life, as it has for me! This also meant studying coaching and training so I studied and qualified with Coaching and Leadership qualifications from the ILM and about 2 years ago I also qualified with a TAP accreditation in delivering training. In my view the qualifications are great, but what matters, even more, is the practice. If there is an opportunity to coach then I take it all day. I am on a mission to help people wake up and this all came about from changing my environment! When I think about it, it’s just amazing. Such a small tweak made a massive difference! We are bombarded with messages all the time, you need to take control! We are bombarded with messages all the time from all our media, you need to take control of that and really feel how it’s impacting you. When I was sliding into my depression I just wasn’t aware of what was happening and was not changing my environment or my daily habits which kept me stuck. If you want to start getting better then it all starts with you being determined to make the first move and taking responsibility for you. First by starting to change your environment and secondly to start changing the habits that aren’t serving you! Only you can get yourself out of it, that was hard for me to accept, because I wanted to blame everything else. It was only when I took the decision to make those changes, to take responsibility, that’s when things started to change. I just didn’t have the self-awarenessI also attended counselling. At first, I didn’t think it worked, this was because I didn’t have the self-awareness and people were trying to explain concepts I just didn’t understand, it just took some time to sink in and some self-discovery. I am still learning a lot, and still, have much to learn about the human condition, and that’s another reason why I want to reach out and help other people. Counselling will help you develop self-awareness and it’s worth giving it a go if you haven’t already. Journalling also helpsFor me journaling also helps, I am now an avid fan of journaling it really helps to get your thoughts down and also getting pen to paper about what you want to achieve. So when you are feeling down, you can go back and look how far you have come in terms of progress. The most important thing is to make sure that you are totally honest about why the way you are feeling. If you do that, you will have a much better chance of tackling the issues that are keeping you where you are. We have also talked about this in the podcast just go listen to episode 5, let me know what you think! Depression was never talked aboutBack when I was suffering depression was never talked about, but now people are much more open and that’s a good thing and if I can add to that then great. I hope this blog adds to that mission to make people aware that there is a way through and by me telling my story I hope this will help you! Have hope trust and a massive amount of true grit!So that’s how you start to get through it with hope, trust and a massive amount of true grit. Just give yourself credit for getting through each day and day by day you will get stronger, you will be able to change your perspective. You can defeat your demons, they may never go away but you will sure as hell know when they are about to rise and crush the movement before it starts! Keep going I believe in you!
