Pain is a signal to take action You’re in pain whether it’s a toothache like I have now writing this blog or some other type of pain, it demands action. If you don’t address the pain it’s going to get worse, whether it’s physical pain and you might need treatment. whether it’s emotional where you might need specialist help from a counsellor, these are big signals that you need to do something. Leave it long enough and things can escalate, for instance, I have a toothache and if I leave it untreated I could lose it. This is a metaphor for life, you need to do something. As they say, prevention is better than cure, but sometimes you do all the prep and in my case brush twice a day and floss but stuff still happens and you need to be ready! Sometimes, there are things out of our control, and we have to sit with that pain and grit our teeth My tooth hurts on and off and I needed to take action to do something to resolve the pain. So I had to call up the dentist! Guess what they’re closed because of Covid-19. But all was not lost they had a website and had to put my details on there, now I’m just waiting for them to come back to me! So what now, I have to manage to pain, and at the moment I can manage it, I don’t like to take pain killers, but other than that I have to dig in with grit and determination and face the pain! As in life we sometimes have to do this. Sometimes, there are things out of our control, and we have to sit with that pain and grit our teeth( that’s not me at the moment I would avoid that because of the pain) So the equation is simple, we move away from pain and towards pleasure or excitement! When we understand pleasure and pain we can start to recognise our patterns about what we move away from and what we move towards. When we understand pleasure and pain we can start to recognise our patterns about what we move away from and what we move towards. If we are fearful we are likely to move away from the event that is giving us that fear, but sometimes when we do this things can get worse. Now to go back to my dentist story, there is one thing I haven’t told you that could have prevented this toothache. I’ve not had a check-up for two years, the reason? I fear the dentist, yes that’s right and now I’m in pain, had I gone to the dentist it may have been prevented right? This goes for a lot of things in your life. If you’re struggling with your career you might want to get some extra support in terms of training or coaching, You might ask where is the pain in the struggle for your career? Well, you want to do something different and you’re emotionally frustrated, perhaps you also have financial pressure, but you don’t want to get to the point where you give up. if you’re struggling financially you have to face it you have to take action be it save more or spend less. Get in touch with people you ow money to etc. If you don’t take action you run the risk that the pain gets so great that you haven’t moved your career or started to sort your debts that you will regret not taking action, or worse still because you didn’t seek help i.e. training or coaching you get made redundant or your finanacial situation goes into freefall. That’s the price that you pay if you fail to grow, fail to take heed of the warning signs. Some may call this complacency avoid it at all costs! I worked for a firm where I was very comfortable in my role, I was coasting, I thought it was lovely doing the same thing each day, knowing my schedule I really liked it. The problem with this is that I wasn’t growing I wasn’t improving my skills. It’s a bit like the boiling frog that I think I’ve mentioned before. If you put a frog in water and gradually heat the water it doesn’t realise it’s getting hotter, eventually, the frog dies because it doesn’t notice the rise in temperature. This happened to me in that job, I was put up for redundancy and it was a wake-up call! Can you see what I’m trying to say, the pain is the redundancy, that’s the problem with being comfortable, it’s a trap and something you should avoid at all costs. You just have to realise it. Some may call this complacency avoid it at all costs! I get it, you might say that I have no control over whether I get a promotion or whether my business grows.I get it, you might say that I have no control over whether I get a promotion or whether my business grows. Yes, you do, you have control of you, you have to focus on being resourceful and not focus on your lack of resources. You need to be creative with what you have, perhaps if you’re in a job it’s going to look for another job at a different company. Or it might be that you apply internally for another role. If you’re in business ask yourself what could I do? What do my customers need at this point? When you start asking yourself good quality questions and you answer them honestly, and with an honest intention that you want to improve you will start to get ideas and then you can start to take action and implement! Pain is a real thing, we don’t like it but it’s a signalYou see pain is a real thing, we don’t like it but it’s a signal that you have to change you have to do something. We usually get some warning, but we don’t tend to want to see that, we have to be conscious, we have to think about where we want to be and be intentional about it. We have to take all precautions necessary to prepare, so we don’t feel massive pain. You will get warning signs that you need to do something. If I need to do something it usually manifests in the form of anxiety, if I’m anxious I’m worrying about something. Going back to my tooth story, I left it a couple of days and now the pain is worse! So anxiety is a signal, you need to examine it, if you can’t do anything about it perhaps you need to talk to someone about what’s causing the anxiety. Usually, there is some form of action you can take to take those precautions so it doesn’t escalate into a full-blown pain fest! I think you get the picture. You should always be willing to learn, adapt, and moveWhen life starts whispering in your ear saying that doesn’t look right somethings changed, investigate, have your radar on? Is there something you’re missing chances are you need to improve take some action. as I said it could be anything to do with your life, financial, relationships, work, career or business. You just have to watch for the signs this is the key is, you should always be willing to learn, adapt, and move if you do that you will stay ahead of the curve. Don’t wait for the pain to arrive pre-empt it do something each day which is going to improve your ability in all areas of your life. So get to it I want you to win and leave a comment below where you have started to take action. Remember there is only action!
